Mental Accounting – The Inheritance

A 54-year-old school administrator from St. Louis came to me shortly after losing her father. Along with the grief came a substantial inheritance of approximately $5 million. She described the inheritance very differently from the rest of her assets. Her retirement savings were “my money,” while the inheritance was “Dad’s money.” Because of that distinction, she wanted to invest the inheritance aggressively and keep it completely separate from her broader financial plan. Meanwhile, she carried a sizable mortgage and other obligations that created significant stress.

As we talked, it became clear that emotion was driving the decision. The inheritance represented far more than money. It represented family history, responsibility, and memories of her father. She felt that using any of the inheritance to improve her own financial circumstances somehow dishonored his legacy. I gently reframed the discussion and asked her what her father would truly want for her. Would he want her carrying financial stress while a large sum remained isolated in a separate mental account? She paused and became emotional. The question changed everything.

Together, we developed a plan that paid down a portion of her debt, strengthened her emergency reserves, and invested the remaining assets for long-term growth. Several months later, she told me she finally felt at peace. She no longer saw the inheritance as “Dad’s money” versus “her money.” Instead, she saw it as a resource that could help her build the life her father would have wanted for her. The experience demonstrated how powerful mental accounting can be and how liberating it is when clients view their finances as one integrated picture.
