Thinking Beyond the Headlines: Market Insights From a Conversation With Mike Green

At Sunpointe Investments, we engage with thought leaders whose perspectives challenge conventional wisdom and deepen our market understanding. Recently, our Financial Advisor Matt Zeigler spoke with Mike Green of Simplify Asset Management, whose analytical approach exemplifies the intellectual rigor we value. (Note: While we find his analysis valuable, we do not endorse his firm’s investment products).

Reconsidering Inflation Metrics

When examining inflation dynamics, conventional metrics may provide an incomplete picture. Green offered an alternative perspective: “If you replace owner’s equivalent rent with a more contemporary measure introduced by the Cleveland Fed, what’s called the Cleveland New Tenant Rent Index, it suggests that PCE over the last year was already around 1.25%—below the Fed’s 2% target.”

This observation highlights how measurement methodologies influence our understanding of economic reality. Traditional inflation measures incorporate significant lagging components, particularly in housing data, creating a disconnect between real-time conditions and official metrics.

Investment Implications: This gap suggests we could see more accommodative monetary policy — such as rate cuts — than markets currently anticipate, with profound implications for both fixed income and equity valuations, particularly in interest-rate sensitive sectors.

Labor Market Data Complexity

Green articulated how structural employment changes create blind spots in traditional measurements: “The dramatic rise in the gig economy has changed the nature of unemployment claims… If you drove for Uber and continue after losing your job, you’re not unemployed. You’re ineligible for unemployment claims.”

He further noted that: “Conditions are much worse for the average American than we think they are.”

This reflects a critical analytical challenge: our economic measurement systems were designed for an industrial economy with clearly defined employment relationships, while today’s economy features fluid arrangements that don’t fit traditional categories. This is especially true post-COVID.

Investment Implications: This disconnect suggests potential policy missteps if the Fed maintains restrictive monetary policy based on artificially strong labor market data. At the portfolio level, this is an additional signal for why we’ve been below neutral on risk assets and also highlights further potential recession risks.

Geopolitical Strategy Through an Economic Lens

Green provided this perspective on current administrative actions: “What is very clear is that the Trump administration is very focused on the risk of China… What he is doing quite successfully is actually interjecting chaos into the relationship between Russia and China.”

Regarding economic policies, Green suggested these might be components of a broader strategy. “Part of the challenge is actually to keep relations with China normalized long enough to allow us to further diversify our supply chains away from China,” he said.

This analysis illustrates how economic policies increasingly reflect complex geopolitical objectives rather than purely domestic economic considerations.

Investment Implications: While we maintain political neutrality in our investment process, we recognize that major policy shifts create both risks and opportunities across market segments and especially geographic regions. We are already seeing some strong relative returns outside of the U.S., which, after the U.S.-market dominance of the past decade, is a reminder of why international diversification is part of our process.

Integrated Investment Perspective

These insights reinforce key principles guiding our investment approach:

  1. Methodological Skepticism: Questioning traditional metrics to develop more accurate economic understanding
  2. Structural Awareness: Recognizing how fundamental economic changes require adaptation of analytical frameworks
  3. Integrated Analysis: Combining quantitative data with qualitative insights while considering interplay between geopolitical, economic, and behavioral factors

Make no mistake about it, these are volatile times. We continue to look for “outside of the box” approaches to improve our processes and outcomes for clients. The Sunpointe Investment Committee meets regularly to integrate these principles into our portfolio construction process, positioning client assets advantageously while maintaining appropriate risk parameters.
